PRO Chess Teams Score Big In Week Five

The Mumbai Movers won one of the most exciting matches of the week as the PRO Chess League's two Indian teams clashed.

Elsewhere, carnage ensued as the league saw a surprising number of blowouts as the Pittsburgh Pawngrabbers, New York Marshalls, Dallas Destiny, Armenia Eagles, Norway Gnomes, and Baden-Baden Snowballs all won their matches with 10+ points.

Atlantic Division: New York Marshalls Smash Saint Louis Arch Bishops

The Saint Louis Arch Bishop were dominant in the initial weeks of the season, crushing opposing teams with gaudy margins. This week, they suffered a gaudy defeat themselves as the New York Marshalls put up double digits against the staunch Arch Bishops.

The star for the New York Marshalls was their board four, Grant Xu, who scored three points and drew both Fabiano Caruana AND Wesley So! His draw against So featured a particularly nice combination to win the queen although he couldn't break So's fortress thereafter.

The match featured many more exciting games. Here is a nice win by Caruana.

Caruana also got lucky in one moment as he was quick to point out in the game chat. The critical variation is given below.

The Webster Windmills still hold the lead in the Atlantic Division as they defeated a slightly soft Montreal Chessbrahs lineup without Eric Hansen, and the Pittsburgh Pawngrabbers are back from the dead as they scored a massive 12 points against the London Lions. In a tight match, the Montclair Sopranos edged out the Miami Champions with a highlight being Dan Smith's board-four antics.

Pacific Division: Dallas Destiny Tie Record Against San Diego Surfers

14-2! The Dallas Destiny tied a league record as they shocked all be defeating the San Diego Surfers in a nigh unbelievable fashion. Every Destiny player delivered, but especially impressing was Zhu Jiner who scored 3.5/4 on board four and played a beautiful combination that recalled a famous historical miss.

Elsewhere in the division, the Minnesota Blizzard convincingly defeated an Australia Kangaroos lineup that has looked much more impressive this season. A Mamedyarov-less San Jose Hackers split the point with a Nakamura-less Seattle Sluggers, and the San Francisco Mechanics got a much-needed win against a Chengdu Pandas lineup that was missing its leaders who were celebrating Chinese New Years.

Eastern Division: Mumbai Movers Delhi Dynamite In All-India Derby

The Mumbai Movers won the much anticipated All-India derby with an all-star 4/4 performance from Baskaran "Beast" Adhiban. Here is his attractive attacking win against the Dynamite's board four.

The Tbilisi Gentlemen and Armenia Eagles also secured victory and amassed more points to maintain their spots at the top of the divisional standings while the Moscow Phoenix bested the Estonia Horses by a half-point.

Central Division: Norway Gnomes At Their Best?

The Marseille Migraines and the Cannes Blitzstreams split an exciting match which featured superstars Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Jan-Krzysztof on boards one. Duda defeated Vachier-Lagrave in their individual match when the Frenchmen must have miscalculated while under pressure.

Saving the day for the Migraines was the young Marc-Andria Maurizzi who was the only player to draw Duda and a winner of a fascinating little game in his individual battle against Sebastian Maze!

Playing without Magnus Carlsen this season, the Norway Gnomes look to be the best they have ever been as they have won all their matches. This week they defeated the Berlin Bears and scored 3.5/4 on both boards two and three.

The Amsterdam Mosquitoes in turn bested a flagging Barcelona Raptors team who has regressed after an amazing seasonal start, and the Baden-Baden Snowballs further contributed to the Ljubljana Turtles poor 2019 season with a 10.5-5.5 win.
