Openings

Catalan Opening: Closed

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 d5 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3

In the 'closed' response to the Catalan, Black prefers not to capture the c4 pawn, declining the attempt to win a pawn or force White to spend time regaining it, while concentrating instead on kingside development. This leads to a tense, closed position which Black attempts to free slowly.

Pros:

  • Solid
  • Little theory
  • Leaves the g2-bishop blocked

Cons:

  • Leaves White with a space advantage
  • Does not really challenge the Catalan
