Sicilian Defense: Taimanov Variation

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 a6

The Taimanov variation of the Sicilian - sometimes called the Paulsen - involves the moves ...e6, ...a6, Qc7, and ...Nc6 (this last move is what defines it as not a Kan). Black maintains the flexibility of the kingside bishop and knight, while preventing Nb5 and fighting for the dark squares in the center.

Pros:

  • Safer than other Sicilians
  • Flexible

Cons:

  • White has many systems against it
  • Less unbalancing than other Sicilians
  • Black gets less attacking chances than other Sicilians
