Sicilian Defense: Taimanov Variation
The Taimanov variation of the Sicilian - sometimes called the Paulsen - involves the moves ...e6, ...a6, Qc7, and ...Nc6 (this last move is what defines it as not a Kan). Black maintains the flexibility of the kingside bishop and knight, while preventing Nb5 and fighting for the dark squares in the center.
Pros:
- Safer than other Sicilians
- Flexible
Cons:
- White has many systems against it
- Less unbalancing than other Sicilians
- Black gets less attacking chances than other Sicilians
